She attended St Paul's Girls' School and Westminster School in London before studying Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at St John's College, Oxford, graduating in 1985. Maddox began her career as an investment analyst, working in the City and on Wall Street, where she was a Director at Kleinwort Benson Securities, leading a team analyzing world media stocks. She transitioned to journalism in 1991, joining the Financial Times as an investigative reporter. She later became a leader writer and oversaw a significant investigation into publishing tycoon Robert Maxwell. In 1999, she moved to The Times as the US Editor and Washington Bureau Chief, eventually becoming Foreign Editor, where she managed the award-winning coverage of the September 11 attacks. In 2010, Maddox became the Chief Executive and Editor of Prospect, a leading current affairs magazine, a role she held until June 2016. She then served as Director of the Institute for Government, focusing on improving government decision-making, until August 2022. Currently, she is the Director and Chief Executive of Chatham House, a renowned global affairs research institute. Maddox holds dual US-British nationality and has been involved in various organizations, including serving as a Governor of the Ditchley Foundation and a non-executive board member of the Law Commission. She authored "In Defence of America," published in 2008, advocating for support of the US post-Iraq war. An accomplished public speaker, Maddox has interviewed notable figures such as Henry Kissinger and Tony Blair, and frequently appears on UK and US media. She continues to publish on UK politics and international affairs and hosts the Independent Thinking podcast.
