Catherine Mulligan is an Advanced Research Fellow at the Institute for Security Science and Technology at Imperial College London. Her work centres on using digital technologies to enhance resilience and sustainability in society. With a background in computer science, economics, and digital transformation, she investigates how emerging technologies can effect meaningful change. Catherine has advised governments, corporations, and NGOs on digital strategies and co-founded the first academic centre for blockchain and cryptocurrency research at Imperial College. She has secured over £6.1 million in research funding throughout her career. She has contributed to global initiatives, including the United Nations' digital cooperation efforts, and served as a Fellow of the World Economic Forum. Her industry experience includes leadership roles in consultancy and technology firms, managing large technical teams across Europe. She also teaches an MBA elective on digital transformation at Imperial College Business School. Catherine holds an MPhil and PhD in Engineering for Sustainable Development from the University of Cambridge. She has authored eight books on mobile technology and innovation, documenting the evolution of the communications sector over five decades. Her work in smart cities and digital standardisation includes involvement with the Open and Agile Smart Cities initiative and ETSI. Additionally, she was a Visiting Fellow at the Glasgow School of Art’s Institute for Design Innovation.
