Dave Rowntree's biography

At a glance

  • Drummer of the iconic British band Blur
  • Solicitor and animator with diverse talents
  • Labour Party politician serving on Norfolk County Council

Dave Rowntree has led an eclectic career, balancing his music, technology, and politics passions. Best known as the drummer of Blur, one of Britain’s most influential bands, Dave has also carved out a distinct path beyond music with ventures into law, software development, and local government.

Born in Essex, he grew up in a musical household, with his mother a viola player and his father a sound engineer. He honed his drumming skills early and later joined forces with guitarist Graham Coxon and frontman Damon Albarn to form Blur in the late 1980s. The band’s rise to fame came with the Britpop movement of the 1990s, with albums such as Parklife and The Great Escape helping to define an era of British music. Their success was marked by chart-topping hits and a transatlantic breakthrough with Song 2, which cemented their global presence.

Alongside his musical achievements, Dave pursued his interest in technology, working in software development and contributing to projects that combine his technical expertise with his curiosity for space exploration. Notably, he played a role in the Beagle 2 Mars mission, assisting with developing the lander’s communication systems. Though the mission faced technical setbacks, it showcased his dedication to applying his skills in innovative ways.

Dave has also been actively involved in politics. A longstanding Labour Party member, he served as a councillor for Norwich’s University ward from 2017 until stepping down in 2021. His political focus has often been on housing, transport, and social equity issues. In 2024, he was selected as the Labour parliamentary candidate for Mid Sussex, bringing his commitment to public service to the national stage.

Whether in music, technology, or politics, his varied experiences reflect his ability to adapt, innovate, and contribute meaningfully to each field he pursues.

Does PepTalk charge a booking fee?

No. PepTalk adds no booking fee, so you pay the speaker's fee and nothing beyond it. The service, from shortlist through to contracts and event-day logistics, is included. For repeat or multi-event bookings, PepTalk can agree preferential rates with your procurement team.

What happens after I send a brief?

Share your event date, audience, format, objectives and budget, and PepTalk sends a hand-picked shortlist within 24 hours. Each suggestion comes with a profile, a fee and a recommendation on the strongest fit. Once you choose, PepTalk handles contracts, travel and logistics through to event day.

What does the typical fee range mean?

The typical fee range is the speaker's standard in-person fee in their home market, shown in their local currency. It moves with format, location, date and session length: virtual sessions and shorter slots usually cost less, while international travel and peak dates cost more. Send your brief to PepTalk and the team will confirm the exact fee in your currency.

Have all the speakers on the website worked with PepTalk before?

Not all of them, and it makes no difference to your booking. PepTalk's network of 15,000+ speakers covers talent the team works with directly alongside speakers represented by agents and agencies worldwide. PepTalk approaches the speaker, negotiates the fee and handles contracting either way.

How far in advance should I book a speaker?

Three to six months ahead is comfortable for most events, and 12 months is better for large conferences, peak-season dates or one specific in-demand speaker. Shorter timelines are workable, and PepTalk regularly fills last-minute and replacement bookings within days. Availability is the constraint, so get in touch as soon as you have a date.
