Giles Duley is a British photographer, writer, chef, presenter, and CEO of the Legacy of War Foundation. Born in London in 1971, Duley began his career as a music photographer, working with notable figures like Mariah Carey, Oasis, and Lenny Kravitz for various publications. However, he shifted his focus towards documentary work in 2004, partnering with respected charities to highlight lesser-known stories and raise awareness for humanitarian causes.
In 2011, Duley suffered severe injuries when he stepped on an improvised explosive device (IED) while working in Afghanistan. As a result, he became a triple-amputee. Despite this setback, he continued his work as a photographer, returning to Afghanistan in 2012 to document the ongoing impact of conflict on civilians. His experiences led him to establish the Legacy of War Foundation, which supports communities and individuals affected by conflict.
Duley's work has taken him to numerous conflict zones, including Iraq, Afghanistan, South Sudan, DR Congo, Angola, Bangladesh, Kenya, Ukraine, Jordan, Lebanon, Colombia, Vietnam, and Nigeria. He has received recognition for his efforts, including an MBE for his campaigning work and an Amnesty Media Award for Photojournalism. In addition to his photography, Duley has made two documentaries for Channel 4 and produced and presented the six-part VICE TV series "The One-Armed Chef." He also serves as the Corporate Impact Advisor for Angelina Jolie's Atelier Jolie venture.
Despite his physical challenges, Duley remains committed to his work and advocating for the rights of refugees and those living with disabilities. His resilience and dedication have earned him a place in the Sunday Times' Alternative Rich List, which honors individuals for their experiences, spirit, and contributions to society.
