Janet Napolitano is an American politician, lawyer, and academic administrator. She was born on November 29, 1957, in New York City and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Albuquerque, New Mexico. Napolitano graduated from Santa Clara University with a Bachelor of Science in political science, where she was the first female valedictorian, a Truman Scholar, and a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She then pursued her legal studies at the University of Virginia School of Law and worked as a law clerk for Judge Mary M. Schroeder of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Napolitano's political career began in 1993 when she was appointed as United States attorney for the District of Arizona. She later became Arizona attorney general in 1998, focusing on consumer protection issues and improving general law enforcement. Napolitano was the first woman to hold the post of United States Secretary of Homeland Security, serving from 2009 to 2013. During her tenure, she led the nation's efforts to prevent terrorist attacks and respond to natural disasters. Napolitano also has experience in academic administration, serving as the president of the University of California system from 2013 to 2020. During her time as president, she focused on increasing access to higher education and promoting research and innovation. However, she faced controversy when she fired 82 University of California, Santa Cruz graduate students for withholding grades in a wildcat strike for a Cost of Living Adjustment to address living expenses. Overall, Napolitano has had a successful career in politics, law, and academia, with notable achievements including being the first woman to hold the post of United States Secretary of Homeland Security.
