Turbulence to Tailwinds: This Leadership Experience Puts You in the Hot Seat

Discover the new hot-seat crisis leadership experience from Matt O'Neill and Emma Campbell MBE: act under pressure, protect reputation, keep teams aligned.

Most leadership development programmes talk about high-pressure decision-making. Turbulence to Tailwinds makes you practise it. Created by airline captain Emma Henderson MBE and futurist Matt O'Neill, this jointly hosted session is built around a simple premise: leaders today are making consequential calls without complete information, in environments that are shifting faster than most organisations were designed to handle. AI disruption, supply chain volatility, regulatory pivots, sudden competitive threats — the conditions are real, and the gap between reading about them and actually navigating them under pressure is significant. Turbulence to Tailwinds closes that gap.

What is Turbulence to Tailwinds?

Emma Henderson has made real-time decisions with hundreds of lives depending on them. She brings a pilot's approach to crisis management into the room — specifically, the AVIATE™ framework she uses with leadership teams:

  • Aviate — stabilise the situation first
  • Validate — confirm what you actually know
  • Investigate — understand what's changing
  • Assess — prioritise your actions
  • Talk — communicate clearly with your team
  • Execute — decide and act

AVIATE™ is a structured decision-making process that works precisely because it removes the instinct to react before you've thought. Matt O'Neill's contribution is the other half of the picture. Whereas Emma's framework handles the moment of turbulence, Matt works upstream — helping organisations identify the weak signals that precede disruption. The patterns most teams miss because they're subtle, or slow-moving, or just inconvenient. His work helps leaders build a forward radar that catches trouble (and opportunity) before it becomes a crisis.

Together, the two frameworks give teams something they rarely get from a single speaker: the tools to spot what's coming and the method to respond well when it arrives.

How it works

The session runs in four parts. Emma opens with the Turbulence Briefing — stories and principles from aviation on how to stay structured when the environment becomes unstable. Participants leave this section with the AVIATE™ framework in hand.

Matt follows with the Future Radar, introducing the concept of weak signals and how to read them. Teams work in small groups to identify real signals already shaping their own industries, which tends to generate some useful arguments.

The centrepiece is the Leadership Simulation. Teams are placed in a scenario (think a technology failure, a supply chain collapse, a sudden market shock) and asked to respond in real time using what they've just learned. The goal isn't to arrive at perfect answers, it's an exercise in clear thinking under pressure, which is a skill that atrophies without use.

The session closes with a debrief, modelled on aviation's post-flight review: what helped your decision-making, what slowed it down, and how leadership choices during uncertainty affect team performance.

What participants gain

  • A structured method for staying calm and clear under pressure
  • A habit of scanning for early signals, not just reacting to visible disruption
  • A shared language around uncertainty that travels back into the workplace
  • Practical takeaway sheets they can actually reference
"Turbulence to Tailwinds was brilliant. Matt got us thinking ahead about big changes coming our way, and Emma's cockpit stories made it all feel real and close to home. Together they showed simple ways to stay steady through uncertainty, AI shake-ups, and tough spots — mixing leadership smarts with pilot know-how. Left me feeling ready, with actual tools to handle the mess in work and life."— Scott Addington, International Marketing Director, SugarCRM

Who it's for

Leadership teams, senior executives, and strategy or innovation leads. Particularly relevant for organisations navigating rapid change; whether that's AI adoption, market disruption, or structural transformation. The session works well as an exec offsite centrepiece, a conference keynote, or an AI strategy day.
