Aleks Krotoski is a broadcaster, journalist, and social psychologist known for her work on the social aspects of technology. Born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, she grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana, before moving to the UK to pursue a television career. She holds a PhD in social psychology from the University of Surrey, where her research focused on social influence in virtual environments like Second Life.
Aleks began her media career in 1999, co-hosting Channel 4's late-night video gaming review show, Bits. She later worked with the UK's Department for Education and Skills on integrating computer and video games into education. In 2006, NextGen.biz recognised her as one of the 100 most influential women in the games industry.
In 2010, she presented The Virtual Revolution for BBC Two, a documentary series that examined two decades of technological change and its societal impact. She also hosted a related podcast series and served as Researcher in Residence at the British Library, curating the Growing Knowledge digital exhibition. Aleks has since presented the BBC Radio 4 series Digital Human, which investigates human behaviour and internet use.
She hosts the Tech Weekly podcast and contributes to guardian.co.uk. Her book, Untangling the Web, published in February 2013, is based on her research into social media and online culture.
