Enric Sala is a prominent marine ecologist, conservationist, and National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence. Growing up near the Costa Brava, he developed a deep passion for the ocean. Sala earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Barcelona and completed his Ph.D. in ecology at the University of Aix-Marseille. He began his academic career at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in California, where he established the Centre for Marine Biodiversity and Conservation. He also worked as a researcher at Spain's National Council for Scientific Research. Realising that his academic work was merely documenting the decline of ocean life, Sala shifted to full-time conservation. Inspired by National Geographic Explorer Mike Fay, he proposed a project that combined exploration, research, and media to encourage governments to create marine reserves. In 2008, Sala became a National Geographic fellow and launched the Pristine Seas initiative, aimed at protecting the world's last pristine marine ecosystems. Under his leadership, Pristine Seas has facilitated the creation of 27 of the largest marine protected areas, covering over 6.6 million square kilometres. His efforts have raised significant awareness about marine conservation, leading to the production of documentary films like "Super Reefs," which showcases the benefits of marine protected areas. Sala has received numerous accolades, including the Young Global Leader award from the World Economic Forum and the Hero Award from the Environmental Media Association. As a staunch advocate for protecting at least 30% of the world's oceans by 2030, Sala emphasises the importance of healthy ocean ecosystems for biodiversity, fisheries, local economies, and climate resilience. He continues to inspire leaders globally to safeguard the ocean's wild places and remains committed to innovative marine conservation strategies.
