Iván Duque | Speaker Biography

Iván Duque, the youngest elected President in Colombia's history at 41 years old, is a distinguished fellow at the Woodrow Wilson Center, a Transformational Distinguished Fellow at Oxford, a Leadership Fellow at FIU, and an Ambassador for the World Coalition for Nature. He is highly regarded as one of Latin America's best speakers and is recognized globally as an expert in sustainability, conservation, green finance, and energy transition.

Before his presidency, Duque began his public career as an advisor at the Colombian Ministry of Finance in 2000. He then served as Colombia's senior advisor to the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) in Washington, DC from 2001 to 2010. He also participated in the investigative panel on the incident between Israel and Turkey regarding the Israeli incursion on the ship Mavi Marmara. Duque later returned to the IDB as head of the Culture, Creativity, and Solidarity Division from 2011 to 2013.

From July 2014 to April 2018, Duque served as a senator in the Republic of Colombia. During his time in the Senate, he promoted various laws, including those related to maternity leave extension, electric mobility development, availability of defibrillators in public places, creation and promotion of BIC companies (Benefit of Collective Interest), and promotion of creative industries (Orange Law). He resigned from the Senate to focus on his presidential campaign, where he emerged as the front-runner.

In June 2018, Duque was elected President of Colombia for the constitutional period of 2018-2022. His government program focused on legality, entrepreneurship, and equality. During his presidency, he tackled the social and economic challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. He significantly increased the healthcare sector's capacity and implemented a mandatory preventive intelligent isolation policy nationwide in March 2020. Duque also established the largest social protection network in Colombian history and prioritized fiscal responsibility, leading to strong economic performance and resilience.

President Iván Duque's leadership was tested by the Venezuelan refugee crisis, with almost two million refugees seeking shelter in Colombia. Despite limited resources, he managed to garner support from local governments and the private sector, utilizing technology and international lobbying to aid the refugees and grant them temporary protected status with the same rights as Colombian citizens.

Duque navigated geopolitical challenges, criminal networks, climate change, and the COVID-19 pandemic throughout his presidency. He prioritized creating sustainable cities, adopting electric vehicles, and preserving Colombia's biodiversity. He has authored works such as "The Orange Economy: An Infinite Opportunity," "Indignacción: Ideas Para la Colombia del Futuro," "El Futuro está en el Centro," "Es con Hechos," and "The Road to Zero."

Overall, Iván Duque's presidency exemplified his ability to lead with humanity, solve complex problems, and prioritize sustainable development for Colombia.
