John Jacobs, co-founder and Chief Creative Optimist of Life is Good, has built a $100 million brand that promotes optimism through art, community, and nonprofit initiatives.
John is the youngest of six siblings and was raised by his mother, Joan, who instilled a strong sense of positivity in him and his brother Bert. He graduated with an English degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1990. Before finishing his studies, he and Bert took a road trip across the country, brainstorming business ideas to express their creativity.
In the 1980s, John and Bert started selling T-shirts in Boston and college dorms. Despite facing challenges, they persevered. Their breakthrough came when they embraced the message that "life is good," which became the foundation of their brand.
Life is Good quickly gained popularity, reaching $1 million in sales within three years. The brand is now available at over 2,000 retailers in the US and Canada. The company also aims to positively impact over 1 million children each year through the Life is Good Kids Foundation, which supports those facing poverty, violence, and illness. Life is Good donates at least 10% of its annual net profits to this cause.
John is a sought-after keynote speaker, known for his engaging and optimistic presentations. He has spoken at events like Babson College’s Global Entrepreneurship Week. Along with Bert, he authored "Life is Good: The Book/ How to Live with Purpose and Enjoy the Ride," published by National Geographic in 2015, sharing their philosophy and practical self-help tips.
John has received honorary doctorates for his contributions to entrepreneurship and philanthropy. His work has been featured in major media outlets, including CNNMoney and The New York Times. Outside of work, he enjoys outdoor adventures with his family and believes in the power of optimism for personal growth and innovation.
