Julian Birkinshaw is a British academic and expert in strategy, entrepreneurship, and innovation. He earned a BSc in Geology from Durham University, followed by an MBA and PhD from the Ivey Business School at the University of Western Ontario.
Julian is a Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship at London Business School and serves as the Academic Director of the Deloitte Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship. In February 2024, he was appointed Dean of the Ivey Business School, starting on August 1, 2024.
He has written several influential books, including "Entrepreneurship in the Global Firm" and "Becoming a Better Boss: Why Good Management is So Difficult," along with titles like "Fast/Forward," "Reinventing Management," and "Giant Steps in Management." Julian has published over one hundred articles in leading academic journals, including the Harvard Business Review.
His contributions to academia have been recognized through various fellowships, including Fellow of the British Academy and Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences. He has also received honorary doctorates from the Stockholm School of Economics and Copenhagen Business School.
As a consultant and executive educator, Julian has worked with many large companies, including Rio Tinto, SAP, and HSBC. He is frequently quoted in international media, including CNN and The Economist, and his article "How Incumbents Survive and Thrive" was named the top Harvard Business Review article in 2022.
Julian is currently co-authoring a book with John Fallon titled "Resurgent: How Established Companies Can Fight Back and Thrive in an Age of Digital Transformation," scheduled for publication in June 2025. His work continues to significantly influence both academic research and business practices.
