About Sir Ranulph Fiennes

First to reach both Poles by surface
First to cross Antarctica on foot
First north-south surface circumnavigation of the world
Ranulph Fiennes is a British explorer, writer, and poet, celebrated as one of the world's greatest living explorers. Ranulph served eight years in the British Army, including counter-insurgency operations in Oman. He was commissioned into the Royal Scots Greys and later joined the Special Air Service (SAS), where he specialised in demolitions. He was dismissed from the SAS in 1966 for attempting to destroy a movie set but continued his military career with the Sultan of Oman's Armed Forces, commanding the Reconnaissance Platoon during the Dhofar War and earning decorations for bravery. He is known for his remarkable expeditions, being the first person to reach both the North and South Poles by surface means and the first to cross Antarctica on foot. In May 2009, at age 65, he summited Mount Everest. His achievements include the first north-south surface circumnavigation of the world from 1979 to 1982. Ranulph has authored 24 books, including biographies of explorers Robert Falcon Scott and Ernest Shackleton, as well as memoirs detailing his military service and adventures. His writing provides valuable insights into exploration and his personal experiences. He has also engaged in political and social activities, standing for the Countryside Party in the 2004 European elections and supporting various charitable causes, including initiatives to address homelessness. As a motivational speaker, Ranulph shares his experiences through talks like "Living Dangerously: A Life of Adventure," inspiring audiences with his stories of perseverance and teamwork. In summary, Ranulph Fiennes has made significant contributions to exploration, literature, and public speaking, solidifying his reputation as a leading figure in adventure and endurance.
