Steve Richards is a well-known British TV presenter, political columnist, and journalist recognized for his insightful commentary on UK politics. He started his career in local radio and regional TV in Newcastle before becoming a BBC political correspondent in 1990. In 1996, he became the Political Editor for the New Statesman while also presenting on various platforms. By 2000, he was writing as a political columnist for The Independent and Independent on Sunday.
He has hosted several notable programs, including GMTV's Sunday Programme for ten years, BBC Two's Despatch Box, and Radio 4's Week in Westminster. In 2017, he presented a series on modern Prime Ministers for BBC Parliament and profiled influential political figures in another series, Reflections: The Prime Ministers We Never Had.
Richards has written several acclaimed books, including The Prime Ministers, The Prime Ministers We Never Had, and Turning Points: Crisis and Change in Modern Britain, from 1945 to Truss, published in 2023. He also hosts the popular podcast Rock 'n Roll Politics, which offers a comedic take on UK politics and media, based on his live one-man show of the same name.
Currently, Richards is a regular panellist on BBC One's Sunday Politics and contributes to various publications, including The Guardian and Times. His latest book, The Rise of the Outsiders, examines the shift in mainstream politics towards the extremes. He lives in North London with his wife and two children, one of whom is a Labour MP.
