Susan Grace Calman is a prominent comedian, television presenter, and writer. Initially trained as a corporate lawyer, she shifted to comedy at the age of 30, marking the start of a successful career in entertainment.
Before her comedy career, Calman worked as a corporate lawyer, including time on Death Row in America and at the United Nations in Geneva. Dissatisfied with corporate life, she pursued stand-up comedy, reaching the semi-finals of the BBC New Comedy Awards and becoming a finalist in the 'Funny Women' competition in 2006.
Calman's rise in comedy was rapid. She starred in the sell-out sketch show 'Ugly Kid' at the Edinburgh Festival, which later evolved into 'Blowout' and won a Scottish BAFTA in 2007. Her radio work includes the sitcom 'Susan Calman is Convicted,' which won the Writers' Guild of Great Britain Award for 'Best Radio Comedy' in 2013.
Her television career features appearances on popular shows like 'QI,' 'Mock the Week,' and 'Would I Lie To You?'. She has acted in 'Fresh Meat' and 'Dead Boss' and hosted daytime shows such as 'The Boss' and 'Armchair Detectives'. In 2017, she participated in 'Strictly Come Dancing,' finishing seventh and later winning the Strictly Live Tour.
In recent years, Calman has expanded her career by presenting the BBC Two cookery challenge 'Great British Menu' and hosting the Channel 5 travel show 'Secret Scotland'. Her podcast, 'Mrs Brightside - A cheerful look at depression,' has been well-received, and she has authored two books, 'Cheer Up Love' and 'Sunny Side Up'. In 2018, she received an honorary degree from the University of Glasgow for her contributions to broadcasting and comedy.
Calman is married to Lee Cormack, a fellow lawyer, and they share five rescue cats. She advocates for LGBT rights and mental health, demonstrating her commitment to social causes alongside her professional achievements.
