Zachary Carter is a consultant with the Hewlett Foundation's Economy and Society Initiative. He previously served as a Writer in Residence with the Omidyar Network's Reimagining Capitalism initiative and spent a decade as a senior reporter at HuffPost, focusing on economic policy and American politics. His work has been featured in major publications, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Atlantic.
Zachary began his career at SNL Financial, now part of S&P Global, as a banking reporter during the financial crisis. He wrote about macroeconomic policy, regional instability, and bank bailouts, with a keen interest in financial regulatory policy. He examined accounting standards that contributed to the crisis, consumer protection issues in the mortgage sector, and oversight failures at the Federal Reserve and other agencies.
At HuffPost, he reported on the Dodd-Frank financial reform law, trade policy disputes, and the future of the Democratic Party. His feature, “Swiped: Banks, Merchants and Why Washington Doesn't Work for You,” was included in the Columbia Journalism Review’s Best Business Writing.
Zachary graduated from the University of Virginia, where he studied philosophy and politics. He resides in Brooklyn, New York.
