Leverage the 3 Communication Superpowers in your Leadership and Business

Antoni Lacinai explains how energy, empathy, and clarity drive engagement as the 3 superpowers for world-class leadership and business results.

In my keynotes, masterclasses, and coaching programs, I always speak about the three communication superpowers. If you master them, you have a shot at being nothing less than a world-class leader. Communication is the key that unlocks engagement, and engagement is the key that unlocks performance. A workplace where people contribute because they want to is much better than one where they do things only because they have to.

When you communicate well, you help the organization move strategies toward reality. Fun fact: you will also come across as more charismatic, thus increasing your influence and impact even more!

The three superpowers

Let’s go through the three superpowers, one at a time:

  • Energy – so that people believe that you believe (why should they believe if you don’t?), and this is mostly visible in your non-verbal communication, i.e.,how you look and how you sound when you communicate. Do you use meaningful gestures? Do you have proper eye contact? Do you lean forward when you listen? Do you smile with your eyes? Can people hear your passion and conviction? Energy is like a magnet. If you have it, people gravitate towards you. If you don’t, they won’t.
  • Empathy – so that people connect with you and feel that you get them, that you are present, and that you are interested instead of interesting. It is here that real trust and loyalty are created. It is here you win people—and business. If you are curious, present, and listen to understand, not just to respond, you show empathy. You show that you care. You become more relatable, and you create a sense of belonging, which is one of the most important needs people have.
  • Clarity – so that they get you and remember what you said. It’s about being simple but still having substance. This is not easy. Most people complicate things with abbreviations, internal jargon, and buzzwords, which just makes people feel stupid. Make them feel smart, and they will follow you anywhere.There are a number of techniques you can use (storytelling, metaphors, the power of three, and so on), but the main points are to be easy to understand and to make your content memorable. People cannot act on what they don’t remember.

Start with Empathy

My advice: Start with empathy so that you know who you are talking to. Then craft a compelling message with clarity. Finally, deliver it with the right energy to boost inspiration. And don’t think that one superpower is enough. Clarity without empathy makes you a dominant asshole. Energy without clarity makes you a clown. Empathy without energy makes you a therapist. It is only together that they create magic.

Communication in itself is worth nothing. But the effect of your communication is everything. It’s like electricity in a modern society. Without it, nothing works. Your communication will either build or break engagement, and as I stated in the beginning, this is the key to performance and results.

Get Results

Here is an example of what can happen when you use empathy in your business. I was giving a one-day masterclass in the three communication superpowers to a real estate company that had issues with its tenants. There were lots of complaints and an overall bad atmosphere. We put a lot of focus on empathy. I got an email from the client after a few weeks. It went something like this: “It’s amazing. Our tenants seem to like us now! All we did was listen more. And the cool thing is: Now we like them too!”

Knowing how to meet, greet, and treat your colleagues and clients positively will impact your bottom line. Soft skills create hard results. My passion is to share inspiration and insights on how to best lead people, serve clients, and collaborate with colleagues. My job takes me around the world, and it is really interesting to see how similar we are in our challenges, and how amazing it is to see people grow and ramp up their skills.
