Shaun Wane's biography

At a glance

  • Head Coach of England Rugby League
  • Former Head Coach of Wigan Warriors, winning multiple titles
  • Inspirational speaker on leadership and resilience

Shaun Wane is a leader who has faced adversity and emerged stronger, making him an inspiring voice for anyone looking to overcome challenges and achieve greatness.

As the current Head Coach of the England Rugby League team, Shaun is renowned for his exceptional leadership and tactical prowess, having steered England to significant victories, including test series wins against Tonga and Samoa in 2023 and 2024, bringing his win ratio as England coach to 93%. His deep-rooted connection to rugby league, along with a lifetime of hard-earned lessons, has shaped him into one of the sport's most successful and respected figures.

Growing up on a tough estate in Wigan, Shaun’s upbringing was marked by a volatile home life and rebellious acts, leading to his expulsion from school and his departure from home at just 15. With no formal qualifications, Shaun channelled his aggression and competitive nature into rugby league, finding a sense of purpose in the game that would change the course of his life. Signed by Wigan RLFC as a teenager, he quickly became an integral part of the team, learning the importance of discipline, respect, and attention to detail—principles that would guide him throughout his career.

Shaun’s journey from a promising young player to an international rugby coach is a testament to his resilience and leadership. As head coach of the Wigan Warriors from 2011 to 2018, he led the team to three Super League Grand Final victories, a Challenge Cup win, and World Club Champions, earning the coveted title of Coach of the Year in 2018.

His leadership style is rooted in hard work and mental toughness, qualities that have seen him thrive not only in rugby but also in the business world, where he has applied his skills as a Leadership Mentor and in roles within the construction and asset finance industries.

Shaun’s story is one of overcoming personal and professional challenges, making him a compelling speaker on leadership, motivation, resilience, and the power of perseverance. His wealth of real-life experience, combined with his no-nonsense approach, offers invaluable insights for those looking to unlock their potential and achieve success in any field.

Testimonials

I heard Shaun speak recently and he was outstanding. His talk on Creating a Winning Culture was powerful, passionate and contained loads of leadership lessons for anyone leading a team or coaching others. I've listened to a lot of people talk over the years, but for me personally, Shaun's was one of the best and most impactful I've heard.

Ian Settle CBE

Director, Natwest Bank

The parallels between sport and business are well known, but Shaun's experience and insight takes it to a new level. His ability to dissect key skills such as leadership, team-building, motivating and goal setting, and translate them into the real world business environment is best in class. I've run courses with Arctic explorers, first grade mountaineers and round the world yachtsmen, but none can match Shaun for the unique understanding of what makes someone tick.

Mike O'Connor CBE

Global Managing Director, Citigroup

Shaun came to Wigan hospital to give a talk about his life and learning. Our lecture theatre has never been fuller. He spoke eloquently, with humour and with great insight into motivation and team work. Our audience of clinicians and managers lapped up every minute of it. I can thoroughly recommend him to any organisation that wants to inspire its staff.

How do I book Shaun Wane for my next event?

Email shaun.wane@getapeptalk.com or call PepTalk on +44 20 3835 2929 (UK) or +1 737 888 5112 (US), and one of our speaker agents will contact you within hours to confirm Shaun's availability and fees. If you can, please include your budget upfront – it helps us fast-track your request. It’s also helpful to know the date, format (virtual or in-person), location, and a bit about your audience.

What is Shaun Wane's speaking style like?

Shaun Wane structures his sessions around career-drawn examples from elite rugby league, using these to illustrate a proprietary framework he calls the High-Performance Pyramid, built on the pillars of culture, standards, and DNA.

What topics does Shaun Wane specialise in?

Shaun Wane's sessions cover fear as a driver of performance, high-performance frameworks for team and culture building, and crisis leadership. He is Head Coach of the England Rugby League team, holding a 93% win ratio in that role, and previously led Wigan Warriors to three Super League Grand Final victories, a Challenge Cup win, and the World Club Championship title.

Does PepTalk charge a booking fee?

No. PepTalk adds no booking fee, so you pay the speaker's fee and nothing beyond it. The service, from shortlist through to contracts and event-day logistics, is included. For repeat or multi-event bookings, PepTalk can agree preferential rates with your procurement team.

What happens after I send a brief?

Share your event date, audience, format, objectives and budget, and PepTalk sends a hand-picked shortlist within 24 hours. Each suggestion comes with a profile, a fee and a recommendation on the strongest fit. Once you choose, PepTalk handles contracts, travel and logistics through to event day.

What does the typical fee range mean?

The typical fee range is the speaker's standard in-person fee in their home market, shown in their local currency. It moves with format, location, date and session length: virtual sessions and shorter slots usually cost less, while international travel and peak dates cost more. Send your brief to PepTalk and the team will confirm the exact fee in your currency.

Have all the speakers on the website worked with PepTalk before?

Not all of them, and it makes no difference to your booking. PepTalk's network of 15,000+ speakers covers talent the team works with directly alongside speakers represented by agents and agencies worldwide. PepTalk approaches the speaker, negotiates the fee and handles contracting either way.

How far in advance should I book a speaker?

Three to six months ahead is comfortable for most events, and 12 months is better for large conferences, peak-season dates or one specific in-demand speaker. Shorter timelines are workable, and PepTalk regularly fills last-minute and replacement bookings within days. Availability is the constraint, so get in touch as soon as you have a date.
