Robert Paylor knows what it means to be truly paralyzed, physically, mentally and emotionally. During the collegiate rugby national championship, Robert sustained a catastrophic spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed from the neck down. Doctors told him he would never walk or move his hands again. But rather than accept that future, he began one of the most demanding journeys imaginable: re-learning to breathe, swallow, sit, eat, dress and, eventually, to walk.

Robert’s story is one of unrelenting perseverance. He endured pneumonia, spinal fusion surgery, and dramatic weight loss. He had to rebuild from the most fundamental of human functions, relying on a mindset shaped by resilience, discipline and purpose. Today, he can walk 500 yards unaided and has graduated from UC Berkeley’s prestigious Haas School of Business, stood to collect his diploma, and married the love of his life.
