In a world of ageing populations, extending working lives is widely viewed as an economic necessity. With up to four generations working together, organisations must ensure workplaces are inclusive, avoiding individual, interpersonal, and organisational harm. In the US, the 85 and older population is projected to increase from 6.7 million in 2020 to 14.4 million in 2040, more than doubling with a 117% increase. In the UK, one in 3 workers is aged 50 or over.

Understanding ageing

Each organisation will have different needs: a one-size-fits-all solution will not exist. Whatever approach is taken, it will be important to measure its effectiveness over time and not just assume that introducing one or more changes means the issue has been resolved. Moreover, as with all steps to support previously disadvantaged groups, any initiatives adopted will need to be carefully communicated as a win-win opportunity to avoid resentment from current age-privileged groups, who may otherwise feel threatened and react in a hostile manner.
