Jeremy Thompson | Speaker Biography

Jeremy Thompson is a highly experienced television news presenter in the UK, with over 40 years of experience. He retired in 2016 after hosting Sky's main evening news for 18 years. Throughout his career, he has reported from various locations, including war zones, natural disasters, major elections, and crime scenes. Jeremy has received numerous awards for his work, including two Emmys and three Gold Medals for Best News Reporter. He was also recognized by the Royal Television Society for his coverage of the Kosovo conflict. Jeremy's career began as a Reporter for the Cambridge Daily News and he later worked for the BBC, ITN, and finally joined Sky News in 1993. As a foreign correspondent, he has covered over 20 wars and civil conflicts, including the student uprising in Tiananmen Square in 1989 and the first Gulf War in 1990/91. He was the first TV news presenter to broadcast live as British peacekeeping forces entered Kosovo and to present from inside Baghdad during the second Gulf War. Jeremy has also covered significant events in South Africa, including the end of apartheid and Nelson Mandela's journey to the Presidency. He has reported on various conflicts and events in Africa, such as the genocide in Rwanda and civil conflicts in Somalia, Sudan, Angola, Mozambique, and Sierra Leone. In recent years, Jeremy has anchored major live news events for Sky News, both from the studio and on location. These include the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the Soham murders, the Madrid train bombing, the Indian Ocean Tsunami, the Israel-Lebanon Conflict, the 7/7 bombings in London, and the death of Pope John Paul II. He has also covered five Olympic Games, British Elections dating back to Margaret Thatcher's first victory, and six US elections. In 2015, he reported live from Paris on the Charlie Hebdo attack and the multiple terror attacks in the city, and in 2016, he reported from Brussels after a series of terror attacks. Jeremy's final assignment at Sky News was covering the dramatic victory of Donald Trump as US President.
