John Hutton, Baron Hutton of Furness, is a prominent figure in British public life. He began his political career as a research associate at Templeton College, Oxford, before becoming a senior law lecturer at Newcastle Polytechnic from 1981 to 1992. Hutton entered parliament as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Barrow and Furness in 1992, serving in various high-ranking positions within the Labour Party. He held three Cabinet-level positions: Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, and Secretary of State for Defence. Hutton stepped back from active politics in 2009.
In 2010, Hutton was appointed Chairman of the Independent Public Service Pensions Commission, where he led a major review of public sector pension provision in the UK. He proposed significant changes to achieve an affordable balance between fairness and cost in the future. Hutton has also held various other roles, including Chairman of the Royal United Services Institute, Chairman of the Nuclear Industry Association, Non-Executive Director of Sirius Minerals plc, Chair of the Board for My CSP, and European Advisory Director for the Dimensional Fund Advisers.
In 2017, Hutton was appointed Chair of Energy UK, the trade association for the British energy industry. He is known for his expertise in defense spending and military strategy, as well as his book "First World War Kitchener's Men – The King's Own Royal Lancasters," which provides insight into the daily routine and reality of warfare on the Western Front during 1915-1918.
