Koichi Hamada is the Tuntex Professor of Economics at Yale University, specialising in the Japanese economy and international economics. He is also Professor Emeritus at the University of Tokyo, where he taught before joining Yale in 1986. Hamada holds an L.L.B. from Japan, an M.A. in Economics from the University of Tokyo, and both an M.A. and Ph.D. in Economics from Yale. His influential work on policy coordination, which applied game theory to international finance, is detailed in his book, *The Political Economy of International Monetary Interdependence* (MIT Press, 1985), and his essays are compiled in *Strategic Approaches to the International Economy* (Edward & Elgar, 1996). He is a fellow of the Econometric Society and served on its council from 1980 to 1985. Hamada was President of the Japanese Association of Economics and Econometrics from 1994 to 1995 and the founding President of the Japan Law and Economics Association in 2003. In 2006, he received the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Gold and Silver Star, for his contributions to Japan. He has participated in various policy committees in Japan and serves as an associate editor for several academic journals. His research focuses on international capital movements, regional integration, and the political economy of international monetary reform, among other topics. Hamada was a member of the external evaluation team for the IMF's Enhanced Structural Adjustment Facility in 1997 and advised the Director General of the WTO on trade system perspectives. From January 2001 to July 2002, he was the first President of the Economic and Social Research Institute in Japan, advising the Council on Economic and Fiscal Policy. He has received numerous awards, including the Fulbright Scholarship, the Ford Dissertation Fellowship, and the Nikkei Tosho Bunka Prize for his work on economic growth and capital movements.
