Miguel Luengo-Oroz is a scientist, entrepreneur, policy advisor, and engineering professor focused on responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) for humanity and the planet. He founded and leads Spotlab.ai, an AI platform for clinical research and universal diagnosis. Previously, he served as the first Chief Data Scientist at the United Nations, where he developed technology strategies and led data science teams across the UN Global Pulse network.
Miguel advises leaders on the implications of AI and frontier technologies for governance and human rights. With over a decade of experience, he has worked with international organisations, governments, and academia on issues such as poverty, food security, and climate change. He is also a professor at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid and a board member at its Telecommunications School.
As a research scientist, Miguel has explored generative AI, collective intelligence, and systems biology. He invented MalariaSpot.org, a crowdsourcing game for malaria diagnosis. He has co-authored over a hundred scientific articles and policy briefs, with his work featured in major media outlets and high-impact journals.
Miguel has received numerous awards, including the Ashoka fellowship, MIT Technology Review TR35, and the EU Responsible Research & Innovation award. He holds a Ph.D. and MSc in Engineering from the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, as well as an MSc from the École des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales and École Normale Supérieure in Paris.
