William McRaven is a retired United States Navy admiral who commanded the United States Special Operations Command from 2011 to 2014. His military career lasted over 37 years, during which he held several leadership positions, including deputy commanding general for Operations at JSOC, commodore of Naval Special Warfare Group One, and commander of SEAL Team Three. He also worked in staff and interagency roles, notably as director for Strategic Planning in the Office of Combating Terrorism on the National Security Council Staff.
Born in Pinehurst, North Carolina, McRaven grew up in San Antonio, Texas. He graduated from Theodore Roosevelt High School and earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Texas at Austin. After joining the Navy ROTC, he entered active service and trained with the Navy's SEALs.
After retiring from the Navy in 2014, McRaven became the chancellor of The University of Texas System from 2015 to 2018. In this position, he managed a system of nine university campuses and six medical centres, overseeing 87,000 faculty and staff and an enrolment of 216,000 students.
