Claude Nicollier, a member of the first group of ESA astronauts selected in 1978, joined Group 9 of NASA astronauts in 1980 for Space Shuttle training in Houston, Texas. During his time in Houston, he held various technical assignments, including software verification, development of retrieval techniques, and robotics support for the Space Shuttle and International Space Station. Additionally, while serving as a Captain in the Swiss Air Force, Nicollier maintained a position as Lead ESA astronaut in Houston, flying various aircraft.
Nicollier has an impressive aviation record, with over 6400 flight hours logged. Among these hours, 4000 were in jet aircraft. Even today, he continues to fly Hawker Hunters during airshows.
Not only has Nicollier excelled in aviation, but he also made significant contributions to space exploration. He had the privilege of being a crewmember on four Space Shuttle flights, including missions to deploy the Eureca and the Hubble Space Telescope. These experiences have undoubtedly shaped his understanding of space and its potential.
Although Nicollier retired from ESA in 2007, his passion for exploration and innovation has not waned. Currently, he serves as a professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne. In this role, he imparts his knowledge and experiences to the next generation of aspiring astronauts and engineers.
Furthermore, Nicollier remains involved in cutting-edge projects, such as the Solar Impulse project. This groundbreaking initiative aims to circumnavigate the globe using solar power exclusively. By participating in this venture, Nicollier continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in aviation and space travel.
