Life throws curveballs when we least expect it, and sometimes, it feels like everything is up in the air. Whether it’s a career shift, personal challenges, or a global crisis, we all face uncertainty. It can knock us off course and leave us questioning everything. But the truth is, uncertainty doesn’t have to derail us if we don’t allow it to. Instead, we should use it as an invitation to adapt, grow, and find new ways to stay focused, positive, and driven.

Having experienced some of the toughest moments in my journey, from surviving extreme stress in the police force to rebuilding my life after leaving a stable job, I've come to understand that resilience is key to navigating uncertain times. Here are some strategies that have helped me keep going, and I hope they’ll help you, too.

Ways To Harness Motivation

1. Acknowledge the Uncertainty

The first step in dealing with uncertainty is to face it head-on. Too often, we push away our feelings of doubt and fear, thinking we should have everything figured out. But the reality is that none of us has all the answers, especially in times of change. When I was in the police force, there were countless moments of unpredictability, where I had to react without knowing what would happen next. It wasn’t easy, but I had to accept the unknown as part of the job.

Similarly, acknowledging uncertainty helps shift the narrative in our personal lives. It's not about pretending everything is fine or that you have control over the situation, it's about being honest with yourself. Recognising that uncertainty is part of life can be empowering. It frees you from the pressure of feeling like you need to know everything and allows you to make decisions based on what’s right in front of you, rather than what you can’t control.

2. Reconnect with Your Purpose

When everything feels uncertain, it’s easy to lose sight of why you’re doing what you’re doing. The key is to reconnect with your core purpose. For me, after leaving the police, I spent a lot of time figuring out what truly mattered to me. It wasn’t just about finding a new career or a new path, it was about aligning with my values and purpose first and foremost.

Take time to reflect on why you started this journey in the first place. What are you passionate about? What drives you? When you can answer those questions, you’ll find that uncertainty loses some of its power over you. Purpose is your compass in times of chaos, it keeps you grounded and moving forward.

3. Take It One Step at a Time

When everything feels uncertain, it can be easy to get overwhelmed. The big picture might seem too much to handle, and the weight of all that’s uncertain can be paralysing. That’s why it’s crucial to break things down.

Instead of trying to control everything or rushing to have all the answers, focus on taking one step at a time. Focus on the next small action you can take, no matter how insignificant it might seem.

When I was dealing with trauma and PTSD after my time on the force, I had to break down even the simplest tasks into manageable pieces. There were days when even getting out of bed felt like a victory. But each day, I took one small step, and over time, those steps accumulated.

4. Embrace Change

One thing I’ve learned is that change is constant. It’s not always easy, but it’s inevitable. And when you embrace it, rather than resist it, you open up the possibility for growth.

I’ve faced some major changes in my life, leaving the police force, navigating PTSD, and shifting careers. None of it was planned, and much of it was uncomfortable. But each time, I found new opportunities on the other side of change. It was through embracing uncertainty that I was able to redefine my path and take on new challenges with a renewed sense of purpose.

If you’re feeling uncertain, try looking at it through the lens of opportunity. What is this moment teaching you? What could you learn from this time of change? Sometimes, the best things come from the most uncertain moments.

5. Focus on What You Can Control

Uncertainty often arises when we feel out of control. But here’s the thing, there’s always something you can control. Even in the most difficult circumstances, you still have control over your attitude, your actions, and how you choose to react.

When I was in the police force, the chaos around me was beyond my control, but I could control how I responded in the moment. I could manage my breathing, my decision-making process, and my focus. In times of uncertainty, the little things can make all the difference. Focus on what you can control, whether it’s your daily routine, mindset, or how you care for yourself. By doing so, you regain a sense of agency in an unpredictable world.

6. Build Resilience

Resilience is more than just bouncing back after a setback; it’s the ability to adapt and thrive in times of adversity. And the good news is resilience can be built. It’s a muscle that strengthens with time and practice.

In my journey, I’ve learned that resilience is about maintaining your emotional health and well-being in the process. When things are uncertain, resilience allows you to persevere without burning out. Whether practising mindfulness, seeking support, or setting boundaries, developing your resilience toolkit is crucial.
