Bridgewater studied English Literature at the University of London before recognizing a gap in the market for stylish, durable kitchenware. She decided to create her own line of pottery, drawing inspiration from the eclectic mix of dishes in her mother's kitchen.
Bridgewater's range of mugs, bowls, jugs, and plates combined tradition with innovation. Despite having no formal training, she used historical research to develop her unique style. Her products quickly gained popularity, and she sold them through a stall in London's Covent Garden Market and at trade shows.
Bridgewater's husband, Matthew Rice, joined her venture, bringing his expertise in illustration to create the distinctive bird and animal motifs that became synonymous with the brand. Today, Emma Bridgewater Limited has an annual turnover of £23.7 million and employs over 350 staff members.
In addition to running her successful pottery business, Bridgewater has authored several books, including "Toast & Marmalade & Other Stories." Her work has been featured in various publications, such as BBC Homes and Antiques, and she has been honored with awards and recognition for her contributions to the ceramics industry.
